Baraca Dell Gemmell, a woman of remarkable independence and boundless spirit, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2025, at the McLaren Bay Region, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories. Born on May 8, 1935, in Pontiac, Michigan, Baraca graduated from Oxford High School, where her vibrant character began to flourish.
Throughout her life, Baraca was known for her adventurous spirit and her unwavering commitment to her family and friends. She had a heartfelt passion for connecting with people, often enjoying visits with loved ones, and her presence brought warmth and joy to every gathering. Her zest for life was reflected in her many hobbies, including drawing, bird watching, gardening, fishing, and playing Scrabble. Baraca's love for the outdoors nourished her soul, and she embraced every chance to explore nature's beauty.
Baraca’s family was central to her heart, and she was proud of her sons, Grant (Dawn) McKinney and Matt (Judy) McKinney, as well as her step-children, Missy Gemmell, Meredith Brown, and Tom Gemmell. She found immense joy in her grandchildren: Aaron, Sandy, Marky, Michael, and Savannah; great-grandchildren, Hailey and Daniel and her numerous great-grandchildren who could always count on her for unconditional love and support.
Baraca was not only a devoted mother and grandmother but also a beloved sister to Marty Barr and a thoughtful sister-in-law to Char Craig. She cherished her nieces and nephews—Brad Cullison, Becca Burgess, Naomi Roberts, Angela (Jeff) Willford and Martin Barr Jr.—as they brightened her life and created bonds that will last forever. She is also survived by her sister, Elsner (Bob) Cullison and brother, Martin Barr Sr.
Her circle of friends was a testament to her kind heart, including special friendships with Verna Gellette, Ann (Randy) Esch, Beth Barron, Amy (Dirk) Knepp, Crystal (Dan) Bailey, Jim Burgei, Mary Bennettee, and Anna (Bob) Beltz. These relationships enriched her life and brought her joy.
Baraca's beloved husbands, William H. McKinney and Louis Gemmell, were her steadfast partners in life, and she held their memory close to her heart. She faced the loss of her son, Mark McKinney, and step-daughter, Missy Gemmell, with resilience, often drawing strength from the love of those around her.
As we remember Baraca Dell Gemmell, we celebrate a life that was lived fully—a life marked by laughter, adventure, and love. Her independence and joy in visiting others will continue to inspire us as we carry her spirit in our hearts.
