Barbara A. Mitchell, a beloved English and foreign language teacher and a cherished member of her community, passed away on September 3, 2024, at the Bay Shores Senior Care & Rehab Center. She was born on December 5, 1942 in Detroit, Michigan, to parents Herschell and Anne Mitchell, who have preceded her in death.

Barbara devoted many years of her life in education, she found her calling as a foreign language teacher. Her commitment to her students was unwavering, and her passion for teaching earned her the distinguished Teacher of the Year award in 1990. She not only educated young minds but also continued to contribute to the field through her involvement with the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at SVSU, sharing her knowledge and love for languages with adult learners.

In addition to her esteemed career, Barbara was a prolific writer and a talented photographer. She loved writing, and sending, birthday and Christmas cards. Her creative spirit shone through her work and interests. She had a particular fondness for the fall, and the beauty of the season inspired many of her written pieces and photographs. Barbara's love for travel and fishing, especially cherished moments spent with her father, added a sense of adventure and fond memories that she carried throughout her life.

Barbara was also known for her strong connections with her friends. Longtime friends Sue Payne, Jane Davidson, Elaine Kirkpatrick, Jeff Wiles, Kim Gosselin, and Jim Gies, were important figures in her life, providing companionship and support. She shared a special bond with Ken Kraft, whom she regarded as her younger brother. Barbara was a devoted animal lover, and her beloved cat, Cinnamon Sugar, brought her great joy. She is preceded in death by close friends Barbara Payne, Carolyn Johnson, and Jan Wiles.

Barbara’s impact on those around her will be remembered fondly. She touched the lives of many through her teaching, friendships, and passions. Her legacy of kindness, creativity, and dedication to education will continue to inspire all who knew her.

Visitation will be held on September 13, 2024, from 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Gephart Funeral Home, located at 201 W Midland St, Bay City, MI 48706. A private entombment will take place at a later time at St. Patrick’s Mausoleum.
