Donald B. Halog of Bay City, Michigan passed away at the age of 79 after years of long and challenging health issues. Born and raised in San Francisco, he was preceded in death by his parents, Biong and Vera Halog and brother, James. Donald is survived by his beloved wife, Irene, dearest father of Tonya (Gray Irwin) Beaverton, OR and Angela (Rafael) Mendez, Clarksville, TN; stepfather to Leslie (Drew) White of Hebron, KY, and Fred (Mary) Edmond of Frankenmuth, MI; he was a loving "Papa Joe" to Gavin and Lainey Mendez, Sarah and Eric Edmond and Taylor and Joey White along with many treasured family and friends. Mr. Halog graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Bachelor of Science Degree, where he was news editor of the college newspaper, "The Foghorn" for two years. After moving to the Midwest, he received a Master of Arts degree in English from the University of Illinois, with advanced graduate study for a PhD. Prior to teaching at Delta College, he also taught at the College of St. Teresa, Winona, MN, Kent State University, Kent, OH and Olney Community College, Olney, IL. Donald was hired at Delta College in 1970 as an English instructor, teaching English Composition and American and English Literature; he became a full Professor of English in 1980. Over the forty years he taught and served at Delta College, Don was the English Division Chairman, Academic Dean and then Vice President of Instruction and Learning Services. He was Co-chair of the College Self-Study Steering Committee, and also served with the Post Accreditation Team. Don had a 25-year association with the Higher Learning Commission as a consultant-evaluator and accreditation reviewer and received a Distinguished Service Award from the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. He had been editor and served on the editorial board of several publications including English in the Two-Year College, and The Faculty Center for Teaching Excellence. Don was a dedicated educator, admired and loved for his wit, tenacity, intelligence and kindness. He was a lifelong fan of the San Francisco 49ers and the Giants and greatly appreciated the nuances of classical music and smooth jazz; he enjoyed gardening for years, and planted many roses, hydrangeas, hostas and lilies in their surroundings gardens. A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, May 28, 2016 at 12:00 o'clock Noon at Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. 201 W. Midland St. Bay City, Michigan. The family will be present at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of services to receive family and friends.
