Dr. Richard “Eric” Strain, a devoted family man and beloved doctor of optometry, passed away on December 9, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on October 22, 1956, in Springfield, Ohio, Eric dedicated 43 years of his life to the field of optometry, proudly owning and operating the Family Vision Center in Bay City, Michigan. Throughout his career, Eric's commitment to his patients was unwavering, and he was cherished by many who he had the privilege to serve.
Eric’s educational journey began at Saginaw Valley State University from 1974 to 1978, followed by his studies at Ferris State University from 1978 to 1982, where he laid the foundation for his successful career. As a result of his dedication to the profession, he became a respected member of several prominent associations including the Michigan and American Optometric Associations, and the Saginaw Valley Optometric Association. His contributions extended beyond individual practice; he was actively involved in the community as a former member of the Bay City Jaycees and an active member of the Bay City Lions Club, where he received the prestigious Melvin Jones Award for his exemplary service. Additionally, he served as a former Board of Fellows Member at SVSU and was a Vision Source member, further highlighting his commitment to improving vision care in his community. Even in death, Eric continues to help others by giving the gift of vision to those in need as his wish to be an organ donor was honored by Eversight.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Kathleen, whom he married on June 6, 1987; his daughter, Kayla (Abe); and his two sons, Bradley (Alexis) and Zachary (Emily). He also leaves behind his mother, Helen Strain, and a brother, Marc Strain (Tina). Eric took immense pride in his role as a father and grandfather, and cherished his step-grandchildren - Layla, Lana, and Jude. His family extends to Andrea Klawinski (Dave), Pauline Dishaw (Rick), Robert Klawinski (Minxy), Lawrence Klawinski (Karen) and Richard Klawinski (Judi). Eric was also a proud uncle to nieces and nephews Taylor, Dakota, Maegan (Jake), Kyle, Roman (Jacqui), Raleigh, Peyton (Allison Ann), and Cade (Alexis), as well as a great uncle to Briar, Lennon, Niko, Welby and Woods. Eric was predeceased by his father, Harold Strain; cousin, Misty Lomax; and his mother and father-in-law, Joan and Donald Klawinski. He was also preceded in death by his brother-in-law, David Klawinski, and nephew, Christian Strain.
