Frederick W. Hine Jr.

Frederick William Hine Jr. AuGres, Michigan Formerly of Bay City Born April 24, 1931 to Gladys (Poirier) and Frederick Hine in Bay City, Michigan. Fred was one of nine children; Frances, Frieda, Thelma, Lillian, Ralph, Vern, Charles, and Roy. As a young man he joined the US Navy, he always loved the Great Lakes and boats and wanted to see the world while serving his country. When he came home in 1954 he started a life with his wife of 62 years Marilyn Emma Schlicker. They had met prior to his leaving for the Korean War at State Park and had corresponded throughout his years of service exchanging romantic letters. Together they raised five children. Everyone who ever met Fred held him in the highest regard. He was our rock - in his quiet unassuming way. He taught his children a strong work ethic, how to treat your neighbor and to use an internal set of right and wrong. The first to be there to help, lend you whatever he had and tell you a limerick at the same time. There was always a project going in his garage and nothing that he could not fix or do. He was self taught and self motivated and was a whiz at the story problems we brought to him after his long day of work. He could explain the "new math" unlike any teacher we had!! Even now when you wonder if you are doing the right thing, choosing the right path you ask yourself what he would think of this decision. Never would you want to disappoint this MAN. After working for General Motors for thirty years he retired. Then he got his high school diploma, a very proud day for him and his family. While working at GM as a plant foreman many times he taught "the college kid" they sent him how to read a slide rule, now he had his high school diploma. Marilyn and Fred started what would be their 29 year migration to Arizona for the winters. Dad loved to play games with his friends - cards, horseshoes, golf and shuffle board. It was with a sense of pride he made the coffee at the clubhouse by 5:30 a.m. for the whole group. At eighty two he learned to email and face-time from his iPad, with daily weather reports from where ever he was, each one signed with Love from Mom and Dad. When open heart surgery was recommended Dad decided he wanted to go for a home run - well he hit it out of the park, bases loaded! Every nurse at U of M wanted to take him home, Mr. Ideal Patient; they played Rock Paper Scissors to see who could have him for the shift. Of course he baked thank you cookies for the staff for taking care of him and found out no bribe just his smile was all that was required. This story would not be complete with a few words about perch, or smelt, or wall-eye, or bullheads! Fred loved to fish and could out fish anyone that shared his boat. Double headers would fill his pail. He will be missed more than we can say. We absolutely adored our husband/father/grandfather/friend and will cherish every moment we shared. With love from his wife Marilyn, children and grandchildren, Susan and Mike Roberts (John, Scott, Kristen and Jennifer), Kellie and Gene Hine (Kristen and Grant), Sherry and Dan Zeitler (Brent, Alex an Austin), Connie and Jerry Witzke (Jarrod, Marcus, Kyle and Kate), Brenda and Jim Hine (Staci, Shannon, Sara, Robert and Heidi) and many great grandchildren. Eric preceded his grandfather in death and we are confident they are together with a deck of cards. Fred was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in AuGres, Michigan. At the request of Mr. Hine cremation has taken place. A memorial service will take place at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2017 at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc.. Officiating will be Rev. Fred Cordts with Committal and military honors following at Floral Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Saturday, January 7, 2017 from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In Lieu of flowers memorial cards for Hometown Home Health and Hospice of Lapeer will be available at the funeral home.
