Our devoted husband, father and grandfather passed away on August 31, 2026 at the age of 90 at McLaren Bay Region. He was born on May 16, 1936, in Bay City, Michigan.
Gary was a loving, talkative, sentimental, dedicated, stylish person that had a great sense of humor and loved playing cards and spending time with his family and friends. Gary served his country in the U.S. Navy and went on to build his career as a journeyman electrician for Dow Chemical. He also gave deeply of himself to his church, his township, and the wider community. A member of Corpus Christi Parish, he served as a eucharistic minister and volunteered for many years at the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry. His dedication to public service was evident in the many roles he held over the years, including 12 years as Monitor Township Supervisor, 30 years as a Monitor Township Trustee, and service as a volunteer with the Monitor Township Fire Department. He was also active in the Bay County Township Officers Association, the Michigan Township Officers Association, and the Michigan Township Participating Plan Board of Directors. In addition, he was a past member of the Elks Club, a former Grand Knight for the K of C 3590 in Auburn, and a member of K of C 414.
Gary will be remembered with love by all who had the privilege of knowing him, he is survived by his wife, Janet Brandt, with whom he shared 67 years of marriage. He also leaves his children, Wendy (Scott) Martin, Gary Andrew (Michelle) Brandt, and Betsy Brandt; grandchildren, Brianna Martin, Madelaina Martin, Veronica Martin, Isabel Brandt, Emma Brandt, Benjamin Brandt, Josephine Olsen, Fred Olsen, and Michael Brandt; close family friends, Marti Combs and Jonathan Cutler; his brother-in-law, Jerry Wirbel; sister-in-law, Nannette Brandt; nieces and nephews, Dr. Mark Brandt, Julia Kondoff, Louis Wirbel, and Polly Wirbel. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his son, Edward Brandt; daughter-in-law, Lynn Brandt; sister-in-law, Pearl Wirbel and his brother, William Brandt.
Funeral Liturgy will take place at 10:00 a.m. un Wednesday, September 9, 2026 at Corpus Christi Parish. Interment will take place at Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will take place on Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at the Gephart Funeral Home from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. The K of C Bible Presentation will take place at the funeral home on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. followed by The Vigil for the Deceased. Gary will be taken to the church to lie in state on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. until the time of Mass. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorial contribution to Corpus Christi Parish or the St. Vincent DePaul Food Pantry.
