Herbert James Stager, 53, of Bay City MI, passed away unexpectedly in a tragic accident on July 8th, 2026. His sudden loss leaves an ache beyond words, but his family and friends take comfort in the many memories he created and the love he gave so freely.
Herb was born April 10th, 1973, in Port Huron, MI to James Stager and Carolyn Rayl.
Above all else Herb loved his family. He was the kind of person who showed up, worked hard, talked loudly, and made those around him feel safe and loved. He especially looked forward to the annual family camping trips, where he could relax, make memories, share laughs, and enjoy time surrounded by the people he loved most.
He had a deep passion for American-made muscle cars and appreciated the sound, power, and craftsmanship that made them special. He loved talking cars, admiring the classics, and sharing that excitement with others, which led to the start of many new friendships through his YouTube channel @MMCGRACING. Recently, Herb had also taken up learning to play the drums, a new challenge that brought out his spirit. He enjoyed finding the beat, practicing the rhythms, and discovering another way to make some noise in the world, just as he did with the engines he loved so much.
Herb held a special place in his heart for his beloved dog, Goose, whose companionship brought him joy. Their bond was a beautiful reflection of his caring nature towards animals.
He will be remembered for his devotion to family, his love of the open road, the rhythm he was just beginning to discover. Though his time here ended far too soon, the love he shared will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Herb is survived by the love of his life of 35 years Jennifer Rusch; his children Cody (Ashley) Stager, Samantha (Zach Rich) Stager, Trevor Stager, Tylor (Danielle) Stager; 7 grandchildren Aubrey Stager, Weslynn Vani, Collins Stager, Skyler Stager, Walker Stager, Riley Rich, Kemper Rich; siblings, Tina Breismiester, Shanda (Philip) Smallwood, Josh Cornwell, Rachelle (Jason) Gentner, Jamie (Dale) Stager; brother in-law David Rush; mother in-law Deborah; step mom Diana Stager; many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his brother Everett; brother in-laws Dale and Ralph; Uncle Richard Stager; his parents James Stager, Carolyn Rayl; his father-in-law Dave Rusch and his grandparents Herbert and Virginia Stager.
A celebration of life will be held later. The family asks that loved one’s honor Herb by spending time with family or taking a drive in something with a little horsepower.
