James T. Lyddy

James T. Lyddy, lovingly known as Jim, Papa, and Pops, passed away on July 14, 2026, at the age of 78. Jim was born on September 4, 1947, in Bay City, Michigan, to the late Thomas and Margaret (Redmond) Lyddy. He was a member of the St. Mary’s High School graduating class of 1966 and proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps.

Following his military service, Jim began his career as a barber, a profession he enjoyed for many years. He later began a long career with the City of Bay City, starting in the Sanitation Department and working his way up to Public Infrastructure Manager. He retired in 2002 after 25 years of dedicated service to the community.

On May 9, 1970, Jim married Jessica London. Together, they built a family that was the greatest source of pride and joy in his life. They had three children: Thomas Lyddy, Christine (Rodney) Schlitt, and Catherine Lyddy.

Jim was incredibly proud of his grandchildren: Kayla (Russell) Bentley, Brendan (Hannah) Schlitt, Caitlyn Lyddy (Kyle Beyett), Nicklas (Karla) Schlitt, Payge Wirtz (Jack Kozielski), and Alyssa Schlitt. He was also the proud great-grandfather of seven great-grandchildren. Over the years, Jim spent countless hours traveling to watch and support his grandchildren in their many sporting events. Being there for them and cheering them on was something he truly loved.

Jim also shared a special bond with his dog, Ted. The two were inseparable companions who enjoyed their daily rides together and quiet evenings sitting side by side watching television.

Jim enjoyed a life filled with family, friendships and hobbies that brought him happiness. He could often be found at the bowling alley, on the golf course, working on one of his woodworking projects, relaxing at the camper, or spending time with the people he loved. He especially enjoyed following his favorite teams and never missed an opportunity to cheer for the Detroit Lions, Red Wings, Tigers, Pistons, and Michigan Wolverines.

Jim is survived by his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren; his sister, Colleen Lyddy; and his special niece, Kelly (Will) Hetherington. He is also survived by his brothers- and sisters-in-law, Nancy Barnes, Chuck London, Bryan London, Kirk (Kristen) London, and Lori (Larry) Barnes, as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents, his parents-in-law, Dwight and Clara London; his siblings, Mary, Patrick, and Ann; and his brothers-in-law, Gerald, Edward, Ronald, Terry and Daniel.

He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered as Jim, Dad, Papa, and Pops. His greatest legacy is the family he loved, supported, and was so incredibly proud of.

Visitation for James will be held on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Gephart Funeral Home, 201 W. Midland St., Bay City, MI 48706. Family, friends, and all who wish to pay their respects are warmly invited to attend.

A funeral service celebrating James's life will begin at 7:00 p.m. immediately following the visitation, with cremation to follow. Officiating the service will be Deacon Ken Kochany Those wishing to make a memorial contribution in James's honor may consider a donation to the wishes of the family.
