Michael was called home to God unexpectedly Monday, January 31, 2022 at Research Medical Center after completing a session of volunteer work. He was the younger of twin boys by eight minutes, born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Charles, Sr and Dorothy (Dickhoner) Mansfield on April 8, 1949. He grew up among row houses, trolley cars, family and friends, and going to the Jersey shore.
After high school, Michael attended divinity school but found working in the oil business better suited him. He spent nearly four decades in big oil, working mostly in accounting. In retirement, he blossomed as a university student, completing a long-desired Bachelor's Degree in Business Administration. Michael continued his studies after being accepted into graduate school and was one class away from earning his MBA at Avila University in Kansas City.
Michael was soft-spoken, principled, exceptionally kind and had a special sense of humor. He loved books-reading history, business and Grisham novels. Movie-watching, walking and spending summers in Ocean City, NJ were his favorite past times. He volunteered at the University of Kansas Medical Center, participating in research studies in the prevention of Alzheimer's disease.
Michael is survived by Ann (Davis O'Meara) his wife of nearly nine years and loving step-son, Patrick O'Meara (fiancé, Rachel Hostetler); and his twin, Charles (Denise), their daughter, Megan (Jeff) Kucharski and children, Benjamin and Samantha. His first wife, Mary Lynn passed in 2011 and extended family of sisters-in-law, Joanie (Joe) Connelly & Marie (Big Mart) Alkis, special nieces, nephews and many cousins stayed close. With his marriage to Ann, Michael gained new family including, Josephine (Robert) Davis aka Butch & Josie, sisters-in-law Mary (Chris) Cody and Cathy (Doug) Kellermann, plus niece, Katie and nephew, James Cody. Friends and relatives from San Diego, Austin, Bay City, Kansas City, Ocean City and Philadelphia circled Mike throughout his life.
Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, February 11, 2022, at Gephart Funeral Home, Bay City, Michigan. Officiating will be Rev. Joseph Atchinson. Friends may visit at the funeral home at 10:30 a.m. until the time of service. A Celebration of Mike's Life will be held at Blue Hills Country Club, Kansas City, Missouri on Wednesday, February 16th, 4 p.m. featuring Philly cheesesteaks, carrot cake & Corona Lights. In late May, an Ocean City mass and luncheon will be planned. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to make a memorial contribution to Kansas University Endowment benefitting Alzheimer's and dementia prevention research led by the KU Alzheimer's Disease Research Center at the University of Kansas Medical Center.
