Mr. Peter D. Haertel, of Bay City, passed away May 8, 2017 at Henry Ford Hospital following a valiant effort to hang on to a life he so loved. He was born in 1957 to Thomas and Mary Jane (Close) Haertel of Essexville. Pete graduated from Garber High School in 1976. In addition to owning and operating his heating and cooling business, Pete previously owned a trucking company and car wash.
Pete is survived by his wife, Judy Barber and children, David (Angela) Bradley, Rhonda (Jim) Van Tiflin, Leah (Jan Behnke) Flores and Anna Maria (Kyle Leathers) Flores. He is also survived by grandchildren, Charles, Bryar, Raigan, Brenan, Breah Marie, Lyric, Carsten, Valentina and Sofia; his siblings, Tom (Donna Rockman) Haertel, Jill (Dave) Gersch and Polly (Kerry) Currie; his mother-in-law, Lois Barber; and sisters and brothers-in-law, Kathy (Mike) Levengood, Sandy Nephew, Peggy (Ron) Layman and Gary (Terri) Barber. Pete was predeceased by his parents, and a brother, Tim Haertel. He will be fondly remembered by many nieces and nephews, cousins, as well as numerous friends and customers who became his friends. Pete had a friendly wave and was a great listener who would make you feel like you were the most important part of his day. He will be tremendously missed by his wife and children and the many to whom he became mentor and confidant. His faithful dog, Nelly, will be lost without her Pete, who has answered his final service call.
The Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at the Gephart Funeral Home. Officiating will be Rev. Charles Campbell with interment following at Calvary Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. The family welcomes anyone who would like to share their stories of Pete to do so during a time of remembrance on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Humane Society of Bay County.
