Richard J. Thompson "Dick" our dad, pops, grandpa and grandpa-great passed away Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Covenant Cooper at the age of 94 years. He was born in Bay City, Michigan on April 18, 1926 to the late Frank and Alice (Cote) Thompson and has been a resident of Bay City all of his life. Dick proudly served his country in the United States Army in World War II and was honorably discharged. On May 28, 1949 he married the love of his life, Madeline and they were married for 63 years until her passing on December 25, 2012. Dick was a devoted parishioner and choir member of Visitation Catholic Church for many years and currently a member of Our Lady of Peace Parish. Dick retired in 1981 after thirty four years with the United States Postal Service as well as a self-employed TV repair man. He was a life member of the Knights of Columbus 4th degree, the American Legion and the N.A.L.C. In his spare time he enjoyed playing the organ, golfing and playing cards (Schmier) with many of his card groups throughout the years. He also spent time reminiscing about the years spent with his loving wife in Arizona.
Dick is survived by his children, Janice (Robert) Helie of Bay City, Carol (Collin Sibley) Matuszewski of Bay City, Rick G. (Susan) Thompson of Wauseon, Ohio and Denise (Timothy) Walsh of Rohnert Park, California; grandchildren, Michael (Jennifer) Helie, Troy (Jodi) Matuszewski, Jessica (Samuel) Weis, Tyler (Emily) Thompson and Breanna Walsh; great grandchildren, Noah, Timothy, Madilyn, Henry and Harper; many nieces, nephews and special friends. In addition to his wife and parents, he was also preceded in death by his grandson, Dana Thompson; brothers, Jeremiah (Marian) and Bernard (Eileen); infant brother, Thomas; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Frank and Katherine Maciejewski.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will take place at a later date. Contributions may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society and mailed in c/o the Gephart Funeral Home, 201 West Midland Street, Bay City, Michigan 48706.
