Richard Gerald Gerard Jr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and friend, passed away unexpectedly on October 31, 2025, in the beauty of the Bitterroot Valley of Montana, a place that he described as true heaven, leaving a profound void in the hearts of all who knew him. Born on January 14, 1959, in Bay City, Michigan, Rick lived a life characterized by unwavering dedication and a generous spirit that touched everyone around him.
Rick retired from Consumers Energy after a commendable 38 years of service. During that time, he held multiple job titles, building many friendships along the way. Rick was a man of refreshing candor. He had a talent for expressive storytelling, never missing a detail.
Above all, Rick cherished his family and those moments spent with them. He was a dedicated husband to Kim, with whom he shared a joyful 44 years of marriage. As a father, he took immense pride in his children, Shannon and Kyle. His legacy continues through them, as well as through his grandchildren, Wyatt, Wade, and Hope Wackerle. Richard found immeasurable joy in their laughter and love; nothing brought him greater happiness than creating memories with them.
Rick was known for his overly generous nature. His kindness and willingness to lend a hand made him a pillar of strength for his family and friends. With a larger-than-life presence, you always knew when Rick entered a room, whether it was with a boisterous song or his infamous whistling. Rick was at home in nature, with a love of camping, fishing, and his true passion, hunting. He was like a natural compass, exploring trails both paved and blazing his own, a trait that helped to make him such a successful hunter. He also loved the thrill of coaching little league teams, proudly sharing his passion for sports with the young players he mentored. A devoted fan of the Detroit Tigers, he delighted in watching the games, often reliving his own youthful aspirations through the athletes on the field.
Rick is survived by his loving wife, Kim Gerard; his cherished children, Shannon (Aaron) Wackerle and Kyle (Jessica) Gerard; his adored grandchildren, Wyatt, Wade, and Hope Wackerle; and his father, Richard Gerard. He will also be fondly remembered by his sisters, Dawn Fenske and Beth (Ed) Haranda, and his faithful canine friend, Boomer. Rick's vibrant life extended to many nieces and nephews in Florida and Michigan; all of whom carry forward the joyful spirit he imparted.
He joins his late mother, Elizabeth Krzysiak, stepmother, Carol Gerard, and loyal canine companion, Gunner, who held a special place in his heart and lived within his fond memories.
As we gather to celebrate Rick's life, we remember a man whose love knew no bounds, whose laughter was infectious, and whose spirit remains ever-present in the hearts of his family and friends. His legacy of love and generosity will forever endure, reminding us all to cherish each moment spent with those we hold dear.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to Rick’s friend and hunting partner, Steve, for his selfless efforts and kindness during Rick’s final moments. Your compassion will never be forgotten.
In remembrance of Rick’s passion for nature, the family has requested that any memorial tributes be made in the form of a donation in Rick’s name toward the purchase of a bench at the Bay City State Park, a place where Rick walked daily and cherished the many friendships, he made along every path shared. Donations can be made out to the Friends of Bay City State Park, 3582 State Park Drive, Bay City, MI 48706 or directly on their website www.friendsofpark.org.
In accordance with Rick’s wishes, cremation has taken place and a celebration of his life will be announced at a later date.
