Son to the late Benjamin (Michael) and Ellenora (Hoerauf) Appold was born May 18, 1926 in Bay City, Michigan. Robert was a lifelong joyful member of St. Paul Lutheran Church, Frankenlust, Bay City, Michigan, and was baptized into the Triune name of God on May 30, 1926. He served on many boards, including many terms as St. Paul Church Elder, and the 150th Anniversary Committee. He sang in the St. Paul Mixed Choir and male choir since 1942, and was a charter member of the choir. He was an avid lover of baseball, having played for many years, and coached little league for many years. From 1946 to 1947 Robert also served in the U.S. Army, Military Police, in the Philippines, at the end of WWII. From 1949 to 1952 Robert also served in the Michigan National Guard. He loved His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, his Church, and his family.
Robert passed away Friday, January 10, 2020 in Grand Ledge, MI at the age of 93 years. He is survived by his two daughters, Patrice Appold of Bakersfield, California, Beth (James) Krause of Grand Ledge, Michigan; two sons, Rev. Robert B. (Elizabeth) Appold of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Rev. Paul (Carrie) Appold of Muskegon, Michigan eleven grandchildren, Matthew (Gosia) Krause, Aaron (Rachel) Krause, and Nathan (Maegen) Krause, Ben (Leah) Appold, Sarah (Jeff) Karnatz, David (Elizabeth) Appold, Greg (Kate) Appold, Elise (Trevor) Bozich, Travis, Rachel, and Caroline Appold; one brother Floyd (Julia) Appold, and sisters-in-law, Marilyn Appold and Mary Lou Appold of Bay City and Helen Gotham of Saginaw; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. In addition to his parents Robert is preceded in death by his wife, Alice Appold, whom he married August 20, 1949; grandson, Luke Daniel Appold; sister and brother in law, Matilda and Gerhardt Zeilinger; brothers and sisters-in-law, Edwin and Malinda Appold, Loren and Carol Appold, brothers Ralph and Harold Appold, and sister and brother-in-law, Wilma (Ernest) Zeilinger.
The funeral service will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14, 2020 at St. Paul Lutheran Church of Frankenlust. Officiating will be Pastor Dennis W. Matyas with Committal following in St. Paul Lutheran Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Monday, January 13, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday at the church from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service. Memorial cards for Concordia Seminary, St. Louis, MO, Concordia University, Ann Arbor, or St. Paul Lutheran Ministry Expansion, will be available at the funeral home.
