Robert Lee Eyre "Bob"

Robert Lee Eyre of Bay City, MI passed away on August 1, 2024. He was born on December 24, 1938 in Detroit, MI to the late Floyd and Helen (Welkenbach) Eyre. Bob graduated from T.L. Handy High School in 1957. He worked for Weber, Gregory and Heineman Construction Companies until his retirement in May 1997. Bob served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam/Cuban Crisis in the 5th infantry division mechanized. He married his high school sweetheart, Janice (Streu) Eyre on June 8, 1963, at First Methodist Church in Bay City. Bob devoted his life to the Boy Scout Program, earning the rank of Eagle Scout in Troop 5, which met at First Methodist Church under the leadership of Fred Cronk. He then served as Scoutmaster of Troop 142 in Bangor Township for 40 years, and was still active on the district level as Boy Scout Chairman the time of his death.

He earned the District Award of Merit, Silver Beaver, George Meany Award, and many others during his tenure. During his 40 years in the construction trade, the only "vacation" he took was to take the Boy Scout Troop to summer camp at Camp Rotary in Clare or Bear Lake in Grayling; or to further his training at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico, and Woodbadge training at Boulder Junction, WI. He was extremely proud of the fact that all three of his sons and a granddaughter attained the rank of Eagle. Bob was also very active in his church, North Euclid Church of God; serving as Funeral Dinner Chairman, Memorial Committee Chairman, and Church Council member. He was always the chief cook for church breakfasts and dinners; and even for outreach to the community through "Food of Faith" meals. He gave generously of his time, talent, and finances to many worthwhile causes. He was always ready, willing, and able to visit sick friends or to take them food during convalescence of bereavement. Bob enjoyed wood carving, hunting, and fishing, road trips, and spending time at the family cottage in Hale, MI, but his grandchildren were his greatest joy. He loved to plan special outings for them, even if it was just a trip to the candy store or ice cream shop.

Bob is survived by his wife, Janice Eyre; he is also survived by his sons, Scott of Bay City; Glenn (Jennifer) of Laingsburg, MI; and Mark (Kaaren) of Salem, MI, and granddaughters Rachel and Autumn Eyre of Laingsburg, as well as nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, his sister, Carolyn Smith, a stillborn son, Robert Lee Eyre, Jr.; as well as grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins.
