Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel. Let us remember with thanksgiving what God has done through his servant Susan.
Susan Kay Pfund was given life by her creator and was born on July 10, 1961, the child of Arthur and Lorna. On August 6, 1961, she received the gift of Holy Baptism and became a child of God.
Susan grew up in Bay City, Michigan. She became a travel nurse, starting her career at Saginaw General Hospital. In 2006, at the age of 44, she entered the United States Air Force as a Captain, serving as a trauma nurse deployed to Balad, Iraq. Susan graciously served our country, caring for the men and women of our Armed Forces for three years before being medically discharged with honors.
Always warm and openhearted to everyone, Susan welcomed many into her circle of friends and family. She extended her hand to anyone she met, and her compassion, loyalty, and affection toward others are qualities we will dearly miss. Susan always made the best of things, no matter what. Her positive outlook—exhibited by her easy smile and laugh, along with her ability to make you feel important, safe, and loved—made it easy to call Susan friend.
Her brave and fearless nature inspired many adventures and trips with friends, always taking the “road less traveled.” Susan made everything fun, retaining her childlike enthusiasm for Michigan’s winters—especially when making snowmen and snow angels. Although we will miss her deeply, we find comfort knowing that she waits for us and all of God’s saints, as we look forward to the resurrection of the body and the life of the world to come.
Susan’s faith in Christ was the foundation of her life, guiding her through every season. She knew her Shepherd’s voice, joyously living and singing, “I am Jesus’ little lamb.” Susan’s faith was continually strengthened throughout her life through the hearing and keeping of God’s Word, the precious certainty of Holy Absolution, and in the eating and drinking of her Savior’s body and blood. Believing that all things work together for good, she bore her cross with quiet grace and dignity, finding strength and peace in the promises of God.
Finally, on October 22, 2025, God blessed Susan with a holy death and took her home to sleep in the arms of Jesus to await the resurrection of the dead.
Susan is survived by her brother Jeffrey (Ann) Pfund; nephews Jacob and Aaron; many cousins, friends, and her church family.
