Thomas W. "Tom" Merkle Jr.

Thomas “Tom” Merkle Jr, a devoted husband, father, Papa, coach, mentor, and friend, passed away on Monday, May 26, 2025. Tom was born to parents Thomas and Anna Merkle on March 30, 1959.

Though his time here was far too short, Tom lived every day with passion, purpose, and a heart as big as he was. Tom was truly larger than life. His presence filled any room, his laugh was unmistakable, and his impact on the lives around him was immeasurable. He was a protector, a motivator, and a hero to many. With a coach’s instincts and a father’s heart, he always knew when someone needed a firm push or a gentle hug. That rare balance of tough love and deep compassion made him unforgettable to all, which is testament to his dedication, leadership, and influence on the field and beyond. Beyond the field, Tom lived life fully and fearlessly. He was an avid outdoorsman who found joy in hunting, fishing, and spending time at Pratt Lake with friends and family.

Tom met the love of his life, Kelly, 50 years ago, and they’ve been inseparable ever since. Together, they built a life filled with love, laughter, and loyalty; a bond that served as a foundation for their family. He was a deeply proud father and a loving Papa, and his family always came first.

A lifelong athlete and student of the game, Tom played and coached football, baseball, and golf. He also co-founded Peak Performance Baseball, where he helped shape young athletes not just into better players, but better people. He was inducted into the Bay County Sports Hall of Fame in 2012, and also became a brewmaster, sharing his homemade beer and wine with those he loved most. In quieter moments, he perfected the art of wood carving, creating prize-winning songbirds and detailed fish, as well as cherished Christmas ornaments for his family.

Above all the things he had, it was the time he gave so freely that defined him. Tom was always the first to show up, lend a hand, or just be there. He helped everyone and anyone who needed him, never asking for anything in return.

He leaves behind a legacy of love, strength, and unwavering support. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Kelly (Brissette), his children Rob (Chelsea) Merkle and Jenae (Josh) Turner, and his beloved grandchildren, Henry and Ruby Merkle. He is also survived by his siblings: Michael (Diane) Merkle, Carole (Gary) Danielski, Barbara (Sonny) Powers, and Brian (Susan) Merkle. Beyond family, his legacy lives on in the countless former players, teammates, and friends whose lives were shaped by his steady presence, humor, and care. His children are endlessly proud to call him Dad, and his grandkids will always know the love of their Papa.
