Walter Hagen, born November 1, 1940, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, October 31, 2025 at his residence. Walter was the son of Konrad and Emma (Braunschweiger) Hagen, born in Schwenningen, Germany. As a child, he remembers bombs exploding in the middle of their street causing homes to be destroyed. In 1959, he emigrated to Bay City. Walter was a member of St. Catherine of Siena Parish, where he sang in the choir for more then 50 years and was very active in the St. Vincent de Paul Society food pantry.
Walter learned his tool and die maker trade in Germany and was employed at Industrial Brownhoist, Saginaw Steering Gear, and Delphi Automotive Systems. He was known for his excellent and meticulous workmanship. He loved European soccer and was a founding member of the Bay City Kickers Soccer Club in the early 1960s. Back in 2013, he was a founding member of the DANK Club (Deutsch Amerikanischer National Kongress) that is based in Chicago. He also sang with the Frankenmuth Gemutlichkeit Club. Walter loved downtown Bay City. He was well known to many, many friends.
He leaves behind his wife, Ann, of 60 years; daughters, Sarah (Dustin) Moore and Laura (Tim) Schmidt and grandson, Quinn Moore. He gratefully remembers the George Kuemmerle family who provided him a home upon his arrival from Germany and for the enduring decades of family friendship.
Memorial Mass for Walter will take place on Saturday, November 8, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Catherine of Siena Parish with Rev. Fr. Jim Bessert officiating. The family will be present to receive visitors on Friday, November 7, 2025 from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Gephart Funeral Home and on Saturday at the Church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of the service. A private inurnment will be held at a later date at Sacred Heart Cemetery in Bad Axe. In lieu of flowers, please consider making memorial contributions in Walter’s name to the Humane Society of Bay County, St. Catherine of Siena, or Family Wishes.
