Wayne A. Meyer Essexville, Michigan Mr. Meyer passed away early Thursday morning August 7, 2014 at his residence in Hampton Township with his loving family at his side. Age 83 years. The son of the late Albert B. and Mattie R. (Barnum) Meyer was born January 28, 1931 in Essexville, Michigan. Wayne was an active member of St. Luke's United Methodist Church. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He retired from Aetna Portland Cement Company and General Motors Co.-Grey Iron Foundry. Wayne served his community as the former volunteer Fire Chief of Frankenlust Township. He also served as a volunteer on the Monitor Township Fire Department, Bay County Sheriff Reserve Unit, and was a member of the American Legion Post 18 and the AMVETS. In his free time he enjoyed playing baseball, softball, golf and an avid Detroit Tiger fan. On September 29, 1956 Wayne married his wife of 57 years, the former Barbara A. Shurkey and she survives his passing along with five children and their spouses; Robert and Susanne Meyer, Renee and Eric Harvin, Richard Meyer, Randy and Wanda Meyer and Robin and Gerald Schieber, 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren, one sister; Katherine Kramer, one sister-in-law; Irma Meyer and many nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents Wayne was also preceded in death by two brothers; Marne and Hail Meyer, one sister; Norma Finks and one grandson; Eric Harvin Jr. The family would like to extend a special thank you to his care givers, Dan Hetzner, McLaren Hospice, Dobson Health Care, In Your Golden Years and the Veterans Administration for the kind and compassionate care they provided for Wayne during the time they cared for him. Funeral Services will take place Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Luke's United Methodist Church, 206 Scheurmann St. Essexville, 48732. Officiating will be Rev. Eric A. Stone with interment following under the auspices of the U.S. Air Force and the Bay County Veterans Council in Floral Gardens Cemetery. Friends may call at the Gephart Funeral Home, Inc. on Tuesday from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Members of the American Legion will meet at the funeral home Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m. to conduct a Memorial Service. Mr. Meyer will be taken to the church on Wednesday to lie in state from 10:00 a.m. and until the time of service. Memorial cards for St. Luke's United Methodist Church or the Wounded Warrior Project will be available.
